The pair of deers facing the Dharma wheel is a commonly seen Buddhist symbol. Often found on temple rooftops, the symbol represents the Teachings of the Buddha. According to Buddhist traditions, after the Shakyamuni Buddha attained Enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, He decided to share His Teachings out of compassion for all sentient beings. He decided on five friends who practised with Him earlier during His days of extreme asceticism.
He walked to Benares where the five friends were residing at a grove#. The grove at Sarnath was called the Deer Park. Here, the Buddha gave His first Teachings – The Turning of the Wheel of the Dharma – at the Deer Park at Sarnath. He taught the Four Noble Truths## and established the Sangha (order of the monks).
